‘The training session
reminded us how we need to
look at more ways to help
someone overcome barriers
to become a member of the
team, changes in working
hours and practices, extra
support and so on.’
Training the line managers and mentors
A day-long training session was delivered at the National Trust’s Hellis headquaters in Swindon for line managers and some of the mentors.
This included a presentation from Heather Smith, the head of Access for All, who discussed the support which the National Trust could offer properties when working with people under-represented in the heritage industry.
The session also looked at recruitment, diversity awareness and bias, coaching and mentoring, plus an introduction to some of the partner organisations.
A second day-long programme was delivered by the mental health charity, Jobs in Mind, for line managers and mentors with trainees in year 3, 4, 5 and 6 on working with people with mental health issues.
A structure was then put in place to cascade the training to the mentors and buddies at the properties.
