First stage interview
At the first interview we interviewed everyone who had applied since, for many people completing an application, this is a barrier in its own right.
Even though we gave applicants the opportunity to write 250 words per question, many people, including some of our star trainees, applied in just 10 words per question! Many people are not trained how to fill in application forms. Those who excel with answering in 250 words are literate, have a good education and been trained to fill in job applications.
The other reason we interviewed everyone who had applied was to allow them to engage with the National Trust.
We interviewed everyone, testing them against the selection criteria, and finding out what made them tick, discovered their abilities and skills, and signposted them to other opportunities including specific volunteering roles, seasonal posts or even permanent roles.
Through this route, properties took on between three and 13 extra people, in addition to the trainee, all from groups under-represented in the National Trust.
‘It varied very dramatically and positively from how we had done recruitment previously. With these traineeships, it was great for confidence-building that everybody got an interview.’
